Athene Pedestrian Bridge Open Now in West Des Moines

West Des Moines has unveiled the Athene Pedestrian Bridge, a stunning new addition to the city’s outdoor infrastructure. Connecting Raccoon River Park and Walnut Woods State Park, the bridge offers a scenic and safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, linking the bustling heart of West Des Moines with its surrounding natural beauty. The opening of the bridge is a nod to the area’s growing commitment to sustainability and recreation. Local officials hope it will encourage outdoor activity, providing residents and visitors with a seamless route to explore both park’s wooded trails, wildlife, and river views. The project, named after Athene, a leading local financial services company, was funded through both public and private partnerships, enhancing the city’s walkability and fostering a deeper connection with its green spaces.
The bridge is 620 feet long and is just the start of the city’s plans to expand connections to the trail network. “This critical connection will not only link these two major parks but also enable the expansion of West Des Moines’ trail system south of the river, including a future link to the regional Great Western Trail,” said Ryan Penning, Director of West Des Moines Parks and Recreation.
Athene Pedestrian Bridge is one of West Des Moines’ recreational projects under the Five Waters initiative, with more improvements on infrastructure in the works.
