West Des Moines Parks and Rec Secures Grant for Water Trails Access
A round of applause is in order for the City of West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department as they celebrate securing a significant grant totaling $475,000 from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and MidAmerican Energy Regional Fund. This funding will pave the way for the construction of water trails access to the beautiful Raccoon River, situated just west of Highway 28/1st Street.
What was once an underutilized area is set to undergo a remarkable transformation into a recreational paradise for our community. This initiative not only promises to enhance local recreational opportunities but also contributes to the broader regional efforts in support of the ICON Water Trails project.
Phase I of the project is slated to commence construction in 2024, with an anticipated completion in the spring of 2025. As we eagerly await the realization of this vision, future phases hold even more promise. Envision additional enhancements like an urban campground, pedestrian trails, singletrack bike trails, and a host of other amenities.
This remarkable achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our grant donors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Iowa DNR and MidAmerican Energy Regional Fund for their invaluable contribution to this endeavor.
